Camera:NIKON D700

On Thursday, my school soccer team dominated the Clearfield High School team, scoring 4 points in the first 12 minutes :-). It was a pretty pathetic game, and there was not much action to shoot. I ended up taking a lot of pictures of the seagulls flying above the field while waiting for something interesting to shoot. Luckily, I was paying attention when the only yellow card of the game was given, and this is the shot I got of it. The other team was getting pretty desperate for points.

I tried a few new things while photographing this game, some of which I had never tried before. About a week ago, my economics teacher forwarded me to the website of pro-sports photographer Dave Black and told me to specifically look at his “Workshop at the Ranch” section to get some good tips on sports photography and the Nikon D3S. I checked it out and found it very interesting, though a lot of it wasn’t applicable to me because I have never used flash systems while shooting sports. I did notice that he mentioned a few times how he would try to shoot at a larger f stop to get more depth of field. I had always shot at the lowest f stop possible to get the highest shutter speed and shallowest depth of field so the subjects would stand out against the distracting background. I decided to try varying the aperture, so I set the camera to shutter priority, 1/2000 of a second, and then let the aperture do its thing. I turned on auto ISO just in case some of the clouds made it a little too dark for the camera. To be honest, I didn’t see any difference, so I probably won’t do it again. Dave Black also mentioned doing more creating things with sports photography, which I tried for about two shots and gave up (temporarily). I’ll try it again when I have more time to experiment.

I also restarted my twitter account, not quite sure why, probably just to learn how to use it. I don’t have much use for it right now. Maybe once I get my laptop that will change.
